Floriana strengthened their position at the top of the YoHealth Malta Premier Closing Round table with a 4-1 win over Hibernians at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
This was Floriana’s ninth consecutive league match without defeat, while for Hibernians it marked a third straight loss, leaving them in real danger of finishing in the Bottom 6 once again.
Floriana took the lead midway through the first half. After a low corner from Jake Grech, Federico Varela delivered a cross and Alen Kurtalic scored with an acrobatic finish for his first goal for the club.
Hibernians equalised five minutes later from a corner. The ball fell to Cain Attard, who fired home his first goal for the club.
Floriana went back in front five minutes into the second half. Another corner from Grech found Federico Varela unmarked, and he scored with a close-range header.
Midway through the second half, Floriana made it 3-1. Paul Mbong beat several defenders before passing to Varela, who finished powerfully into the top corner for his second goal of the match.
In the 87th minute, Floriana added a fourth and final goal when Carlo Zammit Lonardelli headed home from a free-kick delivered by Mbong.
