Max Verstappen has suggested he could walk away from Formula 1 at the end of this season, two years before his Red Bull contract is due to run out in 2028. A key reason behind the idea is his unhappiness with the sport’s new regulations.
The four-time world champion made no secret of his feelings after finishing eighth at the Japanese Grand Prix, having spent much of the race battling with Pierre Gasly’s Alpine, which eventually came out ahead of him.
“I don’t enjoy this Formula 1 anymore,” the 28-year-old told the BBC. “Am I thinking about retiring? That’s what I’m saying. I’m reflecting on everything that goes on in this paddock. There are 22 races and I find myself asking — is it worth it? Or would I rather be at home with my family, seeing my friends, given that I’m just not having fun anymore?”

Verstappen was keen to point out that his frustration is not simply down to poor results. “I know you can’t win or fight for the podium every time, but I’m not enjoying myself. I’m trying to adapt, but the way you have to race just isn’t pleasant. It goes against good driving, and at some point I think this isn’t what I want to do anymore.
“Winning and earning good money is great, but I want to be here to enjoy myself, have good times, and take pleasure in racing. Right now, that’s simply not the case,” he added.
