Manchester United moved closer to securing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League with a 2-1 win over Brentford at Old Trafford.
The home side made a fast start and nearly scored inside the opening minutes. Kobbie Mainoo produced a brilliant run before setting up Amad Diallo, but his effort was cleared off the line.
United continued to push and took the lead in the 11th minute. Casemiro headed home after Harry Maguire knocked the ball across goal from a corner delivered by Bruno Fernandes.
Brentford had chances to respond, with Igor Thiago missing a good opportunity at the far post. The visitors created several openings but could not find a finish.
Just before half-time, United doubled their lead. Benjamin Sesko scored after another assist from Fernandes, calmly placing the ball into the corner.
In the second half, Brentford improved and pushed forward in search of a goal. Dango Ouattara hit the woodwork, while United had to defend well to keep their advantage.
The visitors finally pulled a goal back late on when Mathias Jensen scored from the edge of the box in the 87th minute, setting up a tense finish.
However, United held on to secure an important win. The result means they are now very close to confirming a top-four finish, with a big match against Liverpool coming up next.
For Brentford, the defeat continues a difficult run of form, although they are still within reach of a possible European place.
