Żabbar and Sliema draw as Saints' survival fate remains undecided

Żabbar St. Patrick and Sliema Wanderers drew 1-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium in a match where both goals came in the second half. It ended in a tense way, with three red cards shown in stoppage time.

Sliema came into the game with no pressure, already safe for next season, while Żabbar are still fighting to stay in the Premier League.

Sliema took the lead in the 34th minute from the penalty spot after Gomes Junior was fouled in the box. Luke Montebello scored from 11 metres to make it 1-0.

Żabbar equalised just before half-time through Italian striker Mario Fontanella.

The second half was evenly balanced, with Sliema having more possession but neither side able to find a winning goal.

In the closing stages, things turned heated. In the 88th minute, Żabbar’s Etim was sent off shortly after coming on as a substitute for a foul on Pisani.

Then in the 91st minute, Gomes Figueiredo of Żabbar and Sliema’s Alcino were both shown red cards after an argument.
