Vitinha hat-trick helps PSG beat Spurs in eight-goal thriller

Vitinha scored the first hat-trick of his career as Paris Saint-Germain beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-3 in a brilliant Champions League match, handing Spurs their first loss of the league phase.

Tottenham arrived in Paris hoping to bounce back from their heavy derby defeat to Arsenal, and looking to trouble the defending champions again after pushing them close in August’s Super Cup. But PSG also wanted to respond after losing to Bayern Munich last time out, and they came close early on with long-range shots from Fabián Ruiz and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Spurs held firm and took the lead after 35 minutes with a lovely team move. Lucas Bergvall linked up well with Archie Gray, whose cross was headed back across goal by PSG loanee Randal Kolo Muani for Richarlison to nod in from close range. PSG replied before half-time when Quentin Ndjantou set up Vitinha to smash in a powerful right-footed shot past goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, making it 1-1 at the break.

Tottenham struck again just five minutes into the second half, with Kolo Muani scoring against his parent club after a scrappy corner caused chaos in PSG’s box. But that goal woke up the home side, who turned the game around quickly. Vitinha curled in a brilliant second goal, and a mistake from Spurs handed PSG another when João Neves robbed Pape Matar Sarr and passed to Ruiz for a calm finish.

From there, Tottenham’s defending collapsed. After they failed to deal with a PSG corner, Willian Pacho scored PSG’s fourth, meaning Spurs had conceded four goals for the second game in a row. Kolo Muani pulled one back with a tidy finish to make it 4-3, but any hope of a comeback ended when Vitinha completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Cristian Romero handled the ball.

Tottenham will be worried after another poor defensive performance, having now let in 11 goals in their last three matches. PSG, meanwhile, continue their strong Champions League form with their seventh win in eight games, although they finished with ten men after Lucas Hernandez was sent off for elbowing Xavi Simons in stoppage time.
