Maltese footballer Maya Lucia enjoyed a landmark moment in her career yesterday as her club Apollon FC completed a famous domestic double.
The celebrations came after Apollon FC won both the league title and the national cup, finishing the season with major success and silverware on both fronts.
The cup final saw Apollon FC beat Aris FC 2-1, avenging an earlier 4-1 defeat against the same opponents. It was a closely fought match, with both teams pushing hard until the final whistle.
The occasion was also special for Maya Lucia personally, as she featured in a historic match played at the AlphaOmega Stadium, the home ground normally used by the men’s team. Her appearance marked a symbolic step forward for women’s football.
The game drew a record-breaking crowd, with attendance more than doubling the previous best, showing growing interest in the women’s game.

Lucia came on in the second half and was the only substitute used by Apollon FC. In the final minutes, she made an impact by delivering a dangerous cross towards Freda, which nearly led to another goal.
It was a memorable night for Apollon FC and a significant milestone in Maya Lucia’s career.
