Liverpool’s bad run carried on with a heavy 4-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. It’s now three losses in a row for the Reds, each time letting in at least three goals.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot is under growing pressure, and things got worse early on when Virgil van Dijk handled the ball from a PSV corner. Ivan Perišić took the penalty and calmly scored to give the Dutch side an unexpected lead. Liverpool didn’t come back from behind in their defeat to Nottingham Forest at the weekend, but this time they equalised quickly. Cody Gakpo’s shot was saved by Matěj Kovář, but Dominik Szoboszlai tapped in the rebound.
PSV thought they had gone back in front soon after when Yarek Gasiorowski scored from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Liverpool then dominated much of the first half and almost took the lead when Van Dijk’s header hit the underside of the bar. Kovář also made a brilliant save to stop Hugo Ekitike just before half-time.
Liverpool had been the better side, but they fell behind again just over 10 minutes into the second half. Mauro Júnior played a perfect through-ball to Guus Til, who finished well past Giorgi Mamardashvili. Things got even worse when Ekitike went off injured, forcing Slot to make an unwanted like-for-like change by bringing on Alexander Isak.
The home side’s problems grew even further with 15 minutes to go. Ibrahima Konaté made a mistake at the back, allowing Ricardo Pepi to break through. His shot hit the post, but Couhaib Driouech was there to roll the rebound into an empty net.
Slot made a late gamble by taking off Konaté for Federico Chiesa, but by then it was far too late. Pressure on Slot is now piling up rapidly, and his future looks increasingly uncertain. PSV, meanwhile, will remember this as one of their great European nights. They finished it off in stoppage time when Driouech scored his second of the match, prompting many Liverpool fans to head for the exits.
