After two decades dedicated to the game, Roberto Vella has officially stepped away from active officiating, bringing to a close one of the most enduring and respected careers in Maltese refereeing.
“After 20 incredible years on the touchline, I have decided it is time to hang up the flag and retire from active refereeing,” Vella announced.
Over the course of his career, he served as an assistant referee in 335 Maltese Premier League matches and 76 international fixtures, a remarkable journey shaped by dedication, professionalism, and passion.
“It has been an honour to serve… a journey filled with unforgettable moments, challenges, and immense personal and professional growth,” he said, reflecting on a career that left its mark both locally and abroad.
Vella took time to thank those who supported him throughout his time in the game. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the past and present Malta FA Referees Committee for their continuous trust, guidance, and support throughout my career,” he wrote. He also expressed appreciation to his fellow officials, noting the “support, encouragement, and shared experiences” that made the journey so rewarding.
To clubs and players across Malta and beyond, he offered a respectful farewell: “Thank you for your respect and for contributing to the spirit of the game we all love.”

Away from the pitch, Vella acknowledged the support he received in balancing his dual responsibilities: “A heartfelt thank you also goes to my working colleagues, especially my bosses… your flexibility and encouragement meant more than words can say.”
But perhaps the most emotional thanks were reserved for home. “Most importantly, I want to give special thanks to my family, especially my wife Claire and our kids, as well as my mother Miriam and my late father Salvu, for their unwavering support, patience, and love. None of this would have been possible without you.”
For Roberto Vella, officiating was never just a job, it was a way of life. “Being an assistant referee has been a true passion and a defining chapter in my life. Now it’s time to look forward to new beginnings, with cherished memories to look back on.”
As he steps away from the game, the local football community bids farewell to a figure who served with consistency, dignity, and humility, the hallmarks of a true professional.
