Organisers of the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane have said they are not planning to move the rowing events away from the Fitzroy River, even though it is known for strong currents and crocodiles.
The river is located near Rockhampton, about 600 km north of Brisbane, and is a natural habitat for crocodiles. Some people have raised concerns about safety and fairness, especially because the water conditions can vary across lanes.
Former Olympic champion Drew Ginn said some athletes might be at a disadvantage depending on where they are placed on the river. There have also been suggestions to use a different location, such as Moreton Bay.
However, Queensland’s Olympic minister Tim Mander said organisers are confident in their choice and are not considering other venues.
Around 500 rowers recently signed a letter asking for the decision to be reconsidered.

The river has already passed early testing, and an expert from World Rowing will visit soon to decide if it is suitable for the Games.
Officials say they will continue working to make sure the event is safe and fair for all athletes.
