Ħamrun suffer third straight loss after late Gżira blow

YoHealth Malta Premier 2025/26 – Top 6

Ħamrun Spartans…………0
Gżira United………..…..….1

Maxuell Maia’s 98th-minute goal gave Gżira United a 1–0 win over reigning champions Ħamrun Spartans, further damaging the Spartans’ title hopes and marking their third straight defeat in the YoHealth Malta Premier.

The match started quietly, with few chances in the first half. Gżira came closest early on when Maia tested the goalkeeper, while a header from a corner was cleared off the line.

Ħamrun improved as the half went on and appealed for a penalty, but after an FVS check, the referee instead booked their player for diving.

After the break, Ħamrun were the better side, creating good chances from an El Fanis free kick and a Ceter header, both well saved by the Gżira goalkeeper.

Gżira remained dangerous on the counter and in the 73rd minute, they thought they had scored after a fine move, but the goal was ruled out following an FVS review for a foul by Maia in the build-up

Just when the game seemed set for a draw, Maia ran through in stoppage time and finished calmly to seal a dramatic late winner for Gżira.
