Naxxar Lions FC has publicly expressed disappointment over what it describes as a lack of cooperation in the scheduling of its upcoming fixtures, highlighting a difficult situation involving both its senior and youth teams.
In a statement issued by the club committee, Naxxar Lions pointed to a fixture clash that sees their senior team scheduled to play at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Tuesday 16 September at 21:00, followed by their Under-19 side’s UEFA Youth Champions League match in Gozo less than 24 hours later, on Wednesday 17 September at 16:00.
The club emphasised that in the past, efforts were made to adjust schedules in similar cases. “On previous occasions, adjustments were made to ensure that players and technical staff could dedicate their full attention and resources to both matches,” the statement read. “Unfortunately, this has not been the case this time, leaving the Club with a challenging situation that could have been avoided through better coordination.”
The Youth Champions League match marks Naxxar Lions’ debut in European competition – a moment the club described as historic. “This marks the first time that Naxxar Lions FC will be participating in a European competition,” the club said, underlining the significance of the occasion.
The statement also noted that the club has always shown flexibility and support to other Maltese teams competing in Europe and had hoped for similar understanding in return. “In the past, Naxxar Lions has always shown full cooperation to other teams competing in European competitions, and we expected the same spirit of support and solidarity to be extended to us.”
The club concluded its message by appealing for better coordination in the future to avoid such situations, especially during moments of historic importance for Maltese football clubs.
