Ħamrun Spartans boost confidence with solid win ahead of Europe clash

YoHealth Malta Premier – Opening Round – MD6

Ħamrun S……..2
Hibernians….…0

Ħamrun Spartans moved momentarily to the top of the YoHealth Malta Premier league table following a strong and confident 2-0 victory over former leaders Hibernians. The reigning champions put in a commanding performance, and if it weren’t for some excellent saves by Hibernians’ goalkeeper Hugo Sacco, the scoreline could have been even more one-sided

The Spartans took the lead early on in the 6th minute when Hazdi delivered a perfect pass to Semir Smajlagić, the striker calmly advanced in front of Sacco and slotted the ball into the net to put Ħamrun ahead.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 61st minute. After a cross from the right, Hazdi found Joseph Mbong, who struck a perfect shot past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

Ħamrun continued to threaten, and in the 85th minute, substitute Mouad El Fanis came close to scoring with a solo effort. Unfortunately for him, his low shot struck the post, denying him a goal.

That was the final notable chance of the game before referee Alex Johnson blew the whistle, confirming a well-deserved 2-0 win for Giacomo Modica’s side.

This 2-0 victory means Ħamrun have now gone 360 minutes without conceding a goal.

This victory will boost Ħamrun Spartans’ confidence as they prepare to travel to Poland next week for their UEFA Conference League group stage opener against Jagiellonia Białystok.
