Gżira United secured a vital 1-0 win against Mosta as they continue their push for a Top 6 finish, with five matches remaining before Phase 2.
The encounter was intense and evenly balanced throughout, with both sides enjoying spells of possession and creating opportunities. A draw would not have been an unfair outcome, but the Maroons showed persistence until the very end.
Gżira threatened in the first half through Luis Riascos, who produced a fine run into the area before firing over the bar on 27 minutes. Later, a Maxuell Maia header from an Isemoli N’Sa Chrisnovic cross was well saved by David Akpan, while Andre Penha Da Costa also went close from a corner.
After the break, Stasa Bastic tested the Mosta defence, and Gżira continued to apply pressure, including a free-kick from Maia that was once again kept out by Akpan. Mosta had their chance on 79 minutes when Senghor Diamanka fired over from close range.
The decisive moment arrived in the 89th minute. A well-worked move down the left from substitute Fabricio Virgens who crossed the ball to Andre Penha Da Costa on the right, who finished calmly past Akpan to seal a crucial three points for Gżira United.
The result keeps Gżira firmly in contention for a Top 6 place heading into the final stretch of the phase.
