Hibernians move top of the table after Swieqi loss

A last-minute penalty from Valeria Villegas gave Mġarr United a vital 1-0 win over Swieqi United in the women’s league.

Mġarr welcomed Argentine forward Luz Hernandez, who made her debut for the club after joining in the winter transfer window.

Hibernians women’s team regained top spot in the championship after being awarded a 3-0 win due to Lija Athletic’s walkover.

Viverly Nanez scored on her Birkirkara debut in their 4-0 victory over Mtarfa. Birkirkara scored all four goals in the first half, securing the win before Mtarfa chose not to continue the second half due to a lack of substitutes after their goalkeeper suffered a serious injury.

Nanez joins Birkirkara after playing in the Turkish top division with Antalyaspor. Gabriella Zahra and Charlene Zammit (who scored twice) also found the net for Birkirkara.

This win moves Birkirkara into second place on 32 points, just one behind leaders Hibernians.

In Saturday’s other match, San Ġwann beat Valletta 4-0 to solidify their fifth place, now on 16 points, four ahead of Valletta. Oumaima Mhalli scored a hat-trick, while the league’s top scorer, Hailey Russell, added another.

Valletta gave debuts to four new winter signings: Leona Carabott and French trio Oriane Le Gouez, Lilou Lucas, and Lucie Lucas.
