The first set of Assikura Women’s League awards for the two 2025/2026 seasons has been announced, with Ryan Vella, Valeria Villegas and Nyorah Celeste recognised for their outstanding contributions during the opening phase of the campaign.
Ryan Vella voted Best Coach of Round One
Mġarr United coach Ryan Vella has been named Assikura Women’s Coach of Round One, becoming the first recipient of the award this season. Vella has overseen a flawless start for Mġarr, guiding the Greens to victories in all their opening fixtures. His tactical organisation, squad management and attacking structure have been central to the club’s strong early momentum.
The accolade adds further weight to Vella’s growing list of achievements, following last season’s historic success in which he led Mġarr to their first major women’s silverware through victory in the domestic cup.
Reacting to the award, Vella expressed gratitude for the recognition.
“The coach of the round signifies that the hard work we have put in so far is being recognised, and it also reflects the team’s strong performances and the positive results we have been achieving. This award will motivate me to continue improving and working hard toward achieving both our team goals and my personal objectives. We will keep working in the same committed and focused way we have been showing so far.”
Villegas named Player of the Month for August and September
Mġarr United forward Valeria Villegas has been voted the Assikura Women’s League Player of the Month for August and September.
The Colombian striker has been central to Mġarr’s perfect start, scoring four goals in the opening rounds. Her sharp movement, quick reactions inside the area and composed finishing have made her one of the standout players of the early season. Her form has been a major driving force behind Mġarr’s early dominance.
Reflecting on the award, Villegas said that the recognition carries personal significance.
“This award has a special value for me because it reflects my growth as a player and as a person. It reminds me of the difficult moments I overcame and the support of those who have been with me on this path. It represents a recognition of the commitment and performance I have shown. It inspires me to continue working with discipline and perseverance. I am very happy to win awards with this incredible team that is Mġarr United.”
Celeste claims Youth League Player of the Month
Hibernians rising talent Nyorah Celeste has been named the Assikura Women’s Youth League Player of the Month for August and September.
Celeste has been instrumental in guiding the Paolites to the top of the Youth League table, scoring three goals during the opening phase. Her pace, creativity and confidence on the ball have quickly positioned her among the most promising young players in the competition.
Speaking after receiving the award, Celeste reflected on its importance, particularly following her return from injury.
“This award means a lot to me. After coming back from my ACL surgery and missing almost an entire season, receiving this recognition feels like a really meaningful achievement. It reminds me to keep pushing forward, and during tough moments it shows me why I should never give up. I am so grateful for my family and coaches who continue to support me and push me to be my best.
On a personal level, it boosts my confidence while keeping me humble. It motivates me to stay hungry, set bigger goals and keep working hard to achieve them.”
Lucienne Cini, Chief Operations Officer, and Micol Borg Hefford, personal assistant to the Managing Director at Assikura Insurance Brokers PCC Ltd, presented the awards during a brief ceremony held at the company offices in Santa Venera.
