In the opening match of the ninth round of the Assikura Women’s League, Hibernians and Swieqi United played out a goalless draw in what was one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the campaign.
This result leaves both sides joint second in the table, still trailing leaders Mġarr United, who face Birkirkara on Saturday and can extend their advantage to eight points with a win.
Despite finishing without a goal, the match was highly entertaining, with both goalkeepers, Maya Cachia of Hibernians and Patricia Araujo Da Silva of Swieqi, standing out thanks to several crucial saves.
Hibernians were twice denied by the woodwork, first through a long-range effort by Kabene and then with a superb free kick from Kayleigh Chetcuti, which had completely beaten Araujo. Swieqi also struck the frame of the goal when captain Shona Zammit hit the post directly from a corner.
