Hibernians responded strongly after their loss to Mosta last week by scoring two goals in the first half to secure a 2-0 victory against Melita in a match from the 360Sports Malta Premier Opening Round at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Friday.
The Paolites temporarily climbed to second place, trailing leaders Birkirkara by five points. On the other hand, Melita suffered their fourth defeat of the season and remain in seventh position.
Hibernians had an excellent start, taking the lead just two minutes into the game. Kurt Shaw headed home Jurgen Degabriele’s freekick from the right, leaving goalkeeper Gosef Mizzi helpless.
Towards the end of the first half, the Paolites extended their lead as Jurgen Degabriele skillfully flicked the ball into the net from a Giannis Bastianos cross originating from the left.
