Hamrun Spartans endured their third consecutive loss in the 360Sports Malta Premier Opening Round as Sliema Wanderers secured a narrow victory with a penalty in the first half at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Friday.
This defeat places Paul Zammit’s team four points behind the league leaders, Birkirkara, with Hibernians trailing by one point and Floriana by two. However, both Floriana and Birkirkara have a game in hand. Meanwhile, Hamrun Spartans remain tied for fifth place with Gzira United.
Sliema broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Elionay brought down Myles Beerman inside the penalty area. Murilo Freire successfully converted the penalty, securing the crucial goal for Sliema.
