Valletta emerged victorious in the derby against rivals Floriana with a 2-0 win, both goals coming in the second half of a match marred by disciplinary issues for the Greens.
Floriana were reduced to 10 men as early as the 9th minute when Charles M’Mombwa was shown a straight red card for denying Jefferson de Assis an open goal opportunity. Despite the early setback, the Greens held firm until halftime.
However, Valletta broke the deadlock in the 59th minute through a well-worked move between Jefferson de Assis and Yuri Messias, with the latter finishing past goalkeeper Cioletti.
Floriana’s hopes of a comeback dwindled further when Mattia Veselji received a second yellow card for simulation in the 89th minute, leaving his side with nine men.
Valletta sealed the win in stoppage time when Andrea Zammit led a swift counterattack and squared the ball to Andrei Ciolacu, who slotted home to make it 2-0.
