Valletta had to work hard to keep their unbeaten run going in the YoHealth Malta Premier League, as they narrowly beat newly-promoted Tarxien Rainbows 2-1. The winning goal came just eight minutes from time.
This victory puts Thane Micallef’s side level on 15 points with rivals Ħamrun Spartans, and just one point behind new league leaders Floriana.
Tarxien took the lead in first-half injury time when Tavares headed in from a corner. But their advantage didn’t last long, almost immediately, Valletta hit back. A mistake in defence allowed Messias to fire home and bring the score to 1-1 just before the break.
The winning goal came in the 82nd minute. After Zammit’s effort was saved by Tarxien goalkeeper Cassar, the ball fell kindly to Messias, who made no mistake and scored his second of the match.
Tarxien had a late chance to equalise, but Valletta goalkeeper Dos Santos reacted quickly to deny Ofufu Ibeh and secure all three points for his side.
