Malta sport can confirm that Clive Mizzi has resigned from Gżira United coach following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Żabbar St Patrick, a result that leaves the Maroons anchored to the bottom of the YoHealth Malta Premier League table.
After seven matches without a win and just three points collected, Mizzi decided to step down from his role, with the club’s committee accepting his resignation earlier today.
Gżira United are now exploring immediate replacements, and Darren Abdilla has emerged as the leading candidate to return for what would be his third spell in charge. Abdilla previously guided the Maroons between 2014 and 2016, before returning for a second tenure in the 2019–20 season, during which he led them to memorable European outings and consistent top-tier finishes.
Talks have also been initiated with Winston Muscat, another respected name in local coaching circles, though indications from within the club suggest that Abdilla remains the favourite to take over the side once more.
With Gżira yet to register a victory this season, the incoming coach faces the immediate challenge of reviving form and restoring confidence as the Maroons aim to climb away from the relegation zone.
