On the eve of Malta’s friendly match against San Marino, Head Coach Emilio De Leo and forward Irvin Cardona spoke to the media with a clear and honest message, showing a mix of hope, realism and professionalism.
Coach De Leo said, “We must learn from every match and focus on being consistent.” He explained that progress is not only about results but also about learning and becoming stronger as a team.
Although Malta came close to winning their last game, De Leo pointed out that the team is still developing and taking important steps forward.
When asked about missing important players, even before the Lithuania match, De Leo admitted the team had faced some bad luck. Still, he praised the players who stepped in, including Cardona, Paiber, Beerman and Grech, saying they gave their best and showed that every player in the squad is important.
Irvin Cardona, who made his debut against Lithuania, said, “It was an enjoyable game. I have settled in well and I hope this is just the beginning.”
De Leo also spoke about taking responsibility. “I take responsibility, but so should everyone, both the experienced players and the younger ones.” He encouraged the whole squad to stay committed and keep improving.
Looking back on the match against Lithuania, he added, “We should not give up and we must keep believing.” Although the result was disappointing, he said the team is on the right path.

Ahead of the San Marino match, De Leo asked the players to stay focused, not just tactically but also mentally. He reminded them that even friendly matches are important. “All matches matter,” he said.
Malta will play San Marino tomorrow at 9.00 pm at the Ta Qali National Stadium. The match will be shown live on TVM Sport Plus.
