Kasper Hjulmand named new Bayer Leverkusen manager

Bayer Leverkusen have officially appointed Kasper Hjulmand, the former Denmark national team coach, as their new manager. He has signed a two-year contract and is returning to club football for the first time since 2019.

Hjulmand will lead his first training session on Wednesday, and his first match in charge will be on Friday at home against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Speaking about his new role, Hjulmand said:
“I’ve always seen Bayer Leverkusen as a well-run and ambitious club. That’s been confirmed in recent days. It’s an honour to be given this chance. I’m very motivated to help shape the future of this team, mixing experience with exciting new talent.”

Leverkusen needed a new coach after Erik ten Hag was sacked last Monday, just three matches into the season. Ten Hag had joined the club in the summer after being out of work since he was dismissed by Manchester United in November 2024.

Leverkusen had a strong pre-season but struggled at the start of the Bundesliga, with a 2-1 home loss to Hoffenheim and a 3-3 draw with 10-man Werder Bremen.

Sporting director Simon Rolfes said:
“We are very happy to bring in Kasper Hjulmand. We’ve followed his work for a long time. He knows our club well, and we believe he is the right person to help us build a top team again, capable of reaching big goals in Germany and in Europe.”
