Mario Bonello has been elected as the new President of Athletics Malta following an Extraordinary General Meeting held on Thursday evening. He will serve until the end of the current Council term in 2026.
The Association said the appointment ensures continuity as preparations continue for upcoming domestic and international competitions. Bonello is expected to prioritise athlete development pathways, elevate competition standards and strengthen club support across the federation, while working closely with coaches, officials and stakeholder bodies.
Bonello brings to the role the perspective of an elite former athlete. Born on 28 January 1974, he is a retired Maltese sprinter who represented Malta at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, competed at two outdoor World Championships and one indoor edition, and won multiple medals at the Games of the Small States of Europe. His track career gives him first-hand experience of the performance demands and structural support required to progress from youth to senior level and to compete on the international stage.
Athletics Malta is expected to confirm committee appointments and immediate action points in the coming days. With the competitive season ramping up, Bonello’s mandate will be judged on tangible improvements in governance, athlete support and international results as the federation builds towards 2026.
