Wood penalty gives Forest first leg advantage over Aston Villa

Nottingham Forest made full use of the City Ground atmosphere as they claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final.

The all-English tie began in cautious fashion, with both sides aware of the importance of avoiding early damage in a contest likely to be decided over fine margins. Villa showed flashes of danger through Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers, but Stefan Ortega was alert to deny both efforts.

Forest also grew into the match and came close to breaking the deadlock when Igor Jesus forced Emiliano Martinez into a crucial save from close range. The Villa goalkeeper reacted just in time to prevent the ball from crossing the line, keeping the visitors level before the interval.

After a relatively balanced first half, the decisive moment arrived following the restart. Omari Hutchinson kept the ball alive near the byline before his delivery struck the outstretched arm of Lucas Digne. Referee Joao Pinheiro was sent to the VAR monitor and, after reviewing the incident, awarded Forest a penalty.

Chris Wood stepped up with confidence and made no mistake, driving his spot kick into the top corner to put Forest ahead. It was another important goal for the striker, who has now scored in consecutive matches since returning from injury.

Villa were expected to respond strongly, but Unai Emery’s side struggled to build sustained pressure after going behind. Forest, disciplined and organised, managed the final stages well and looked the more likely team to add another goal.

The result gives Forest a valuable advantage ahead of the second leg, although their task remains far from complete. They have not beaten Aston Villa away from home since 1994, meaning the return fixture at Villa Park will still present a major challenge.

For Villa, the defeat leaves them needing a much sharper display if they are to keep their European hopes alive. Emery, who has an outstanding record in this competition, will know that his team must show far greater attacking urgency in the second leg to reach another continental final.
