World number one Jannik Sinner has reached his first French Open final after beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets: 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3). The match was a thrilling battle between generations, with Sinner holding his nerve against the experienced Serbian star.
Djokovic, aiming to win a record 25th Grand Slam title, struggled at times with Sinner’s fast and powerful shots. The Italian kept his focus and stayed strong, even when Djokovic had chances to win the third set.
Sinner, who recently returned from a doping ban, said: “It was really special to play Novak in a Grand Slam semi-final. He’s a role model, but I had to focus and play my best tennis.”
Djokovic showed moments of brilliance and fought hard, but Sinner was simply too good. The 23-year-old is now set to face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday’s final.
Alcaraz went through after Lorenzo Musetti had to retire injured early in their semi-final.
This year’s French Open marks the first time since 1984 that both the men’s and women’s singles finals feature the world’s top two ranked players.
