Malta wins Davis Cup Group IV Europe

Malta Promoted to Group III

In Tirana the Maltese tennis team competing in the 2024 Davis Cup Group IV – Europe, have placed first in the Davis Cup Group IV Europe after beating Liechtenstein in the final playoff earlier today. The team from Malta led by captain Mark Gatt, was made up of Liam Delicata and Alex de Gabriele. In the final Malta beat Liechtenstein 2-0, as Liam Delicata beat Mauritz Glauser with the score of 6-3, 6-2 playing at No 2 and Alex de Gabriele beat Serafin Zund with the score of 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in a match that last 2 hours and 36 minutes. 

Earlier in the week Malta topped their group as they swept first ranked Armenia and home team Albania. In the tie against Armenia, Delicata has the upper hand on Avaneksyan 6-1, 6-3, while de Gabriele beat Khachatrayan 6-4, 6-1. Malta made it 3-0 when Delicata and deGabriele teamed in doubles for an emphatic win 6-1, 6-2. Malta had similar success against Albania. The Maltese players continued their show of force by beating the home team 3-0. In the first match Delicata won comfortable 6-0,6-2, while deGabriele dropped only one game in his encounter to win 6-0, 6-1. In the doubles match Delicata and de Gabriele made it 3 from 3 with a win of 6-0, 6-1.

This was the second promotion to Group III Europe for Malta in recent years following the success the Malta team has in Azerbaijan in 2022.
