50 days until the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

We’re getting closer — so how are the leading contenders for the World Cup shaping up?

Another day in the World Cup cycle brings yet another “final ticket sales phase” announcement from FIFA, expected in the coming hours. It’s beginning to feel like those furniture stores that constantly advertise discounts that “must end Sunday.” Despite the heavy promotion, demand for tickets appears to have been less overwhelming than initially suggested.

Meanwhile, hoteliers across the United States are realising that the promised summer boom may not be materialising as expected. According to FIFA’s own projections, the tournament could inject $40.9 billion (£30.2 billion) into the U.S. economy, but current booking figures suggest reality is falling short. As highlighted in The Athletic, reservations remain well below what many had anticipated, far from the “cornucopia” FIFA had promised.

Still, with just 50 days remaining until the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, attention is increasingly shifting away from the politics and logistics and back to the football itself. Here’s a look at how some of the tournament favourites are shaping up:

France national football team
France look like serious contenders. Their attacking depth is frightening, with stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembélé all enjoying excellent seasons. And that’s before even mentioning Rayan Cherki, Désiré Doué, and Marcus Thuram. Head coach Didier Deschamps has no shortage of options.

Spain national football team
Spain have evolved considerably since winning UEFA Euro 2024. Players who were central to that success — Rodri, Álvaro Morata, and Nico Williams — may not play as prominent a role this time. Instead, much of the spotlight falls on Lamine Yamal, who could prove pivotal to their hopes.

Argentina national football team
Argentina’s preparation has been somewhat unusual, with a number of underwhelming friendly matches raising questions. Lionel Messi has yet to officially confirm his participation, though it would be a surprise if he missed the tournament if fully fit. Defending the title they won at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, however, will be a major challenge.

England national football team
Harry Kane is currently in outstanding form, but England’s biggest concern is what happens if he gets injured or needs rest. Head coach Thomas Tuchel appears short on alternatives, and using Phil Foden as a false nine has not looked like a convincing solution. For England, much may depend on Kane staying fit.

Germany national football team
Germany have struggled at recent World Cups, suffering group-stage exits in both 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2022 FIFA World Cup. While they remain among the favourites on paper, there are clear concerns. A front three featuring Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, and Kai Havertz has plenty of potential, but consistency has been lacking, while coach Julian Nagelsmann is still searching for defensive stability.

With the countdown continuing, the pressure is mounting — and soon, the talking will stop when the action begins in North America.
