Maltese Mountaineer Nicky Ellul to attempt Mount Everest climb in 2026 spring season

Local mountaineer Nicky Ellul has confirmed plans to attempt a summit of Mount Everest during the 2026 climbing season, marking a significant step in his high altitude mountaineering career.

The announcement was made through a short video shared on social media, where Ellul outlined his objective to take on the world’s highest mountain and document the journey from preparation through to the summit attempt. The project is scheduled for the spring 2026 climbing window, which traditionally begins in April and offers the most favourable conditions for ascents on Mount Everest.

Ellul has previously completed ascents of several major peaks, including Mount Elbrus, the Matterhorn, Mount Kilimanjaro and Himlung Himal, which stands at 7,126 metres. An Everest expedition represents his most demanding challenge to date, both in terms of altitude and logistical complexity.

According to Ellul, the expedition is not solely focused on reaching the summit. He aims to present an accurate account of high altitude mountaineering, including the preparation required, the physical and mental demands involved, and the importance of risk management and respect for the mountain environment.

In the lead up to the expedition, Ellul plans to share insights into his training programme, acclimatisation process and overall preparation for an Everest attempt. These updates are intended to provide a realistic view of what is involved in undertaking such an expedition, from long term physical conditioning to coping with extreme conditions at altitude.

A successful ascent of Mount Everest would place Ellul among a limited number of climbers worldwide who reach the summit each year. The attempt is expected to attract interest both locally and internationally as preparations continue ahead of the 2026 season.
