VisitMalta Women Club Trophy starts with two matches at Ta Qali

The 2026 VisitMalta Women Club Trophy is set to begin this Sunday with two opening matches as four leading European women football clubs start their tournament campaign in Malta.

The inaugural edition of the VisitMalta Women Club Trophy will be played across several venues, including the National Football Centre, the Malta FA Training Grounds and the Tony Bezzina Stadium. The competition brings together top tier teams from Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, highlighting Malta’s growing role as a host destination for international women football events.

Sunday’s opening fixture will see German side VfL Wolfsburg face PSV Vrouwen from the Netherlands at the National Football Centre. This match will be followed later in the day by an encounter between Swiss club FC Basel and German outfit TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at the Malta FA Training Grounds. All matches are scheduled to take place subject to weather conditions.

The four participating clubs are currently holding a training camp in Malta ahead of the tournament. VfL Wolfsburg and TSG Hoffenheim arrived earlier in the week, with PSV Vrouwen and FC Basel joining them the following day. The training camp forms part of their preparations for the second half of their respective domestic and European seasons.

The tournament will continue on Wednesday with two further matches. PSV Vrouwen will meet TSG Hoffenheim at the National Football Centre during the morning, while VfL Wolfsburg will face FC Basel in the afternoon at the Tony Bezzina Stadium. The team that finishes with the highest number of points across the tournament fixtures will be crowned winners of the first VisitMalta Women Club Trophy. The event is supported by the Malta Football Association.

VfL Wolfsburg enter the tournament while competing near the top of the Frauen Bundesliga standings and are also involved in European competition. TSG Hoffenheim resume their domestic campaign positioned in the upper half of the league table following a recent change in head coach. PSV Vrouwen are currently among the leading teams in the Dutch Eredivisie, while FC Basel concluded their most recent league phase level on points with one of the top sides in the Swiss Women Super League.

Coaches from all four clubs have highlighted the value of the Malta training camp, noting the quality of facilities, favourable weather conditions and the opportunity to face strong international opponents. The tournament matches are expected to provide important competitive minutes and help teams assess their progress ahead of the demanding second half of the season.

With high level European clubs taking part, the VisitMalta Women Club Trophy adds further visibility to women football in Malta and offers local supporters the chance to watch elite international teams in action.
