Southern Region Local Councils’ Cup officially launched at Malta Equidrome

The third edition of the Southern Region Local Councils’ Cup has been officially launched, with this year’s event set to take place on Sunday, 23 February 2025, at the Marsa Racecourse. The launch was marked by a press conference at Malta Equidrome, where representatives from the participating local councils gathered for the official draw.

Local councils from Qormi, Żejtun, Birżebbuġa, Għaxaq, Luqa, Ħamrun, Gudja, Marsa, Marsaskala, Marsaxlokk, Santa Luċija, and Santa Venera took part in the draw, each being paired with a horse set to compete in the first major final of the 2025 season, organised by the Malta Racing Club. A second draw determined the starting positions for the race.

Southern Region President Jesmond Aquilina addressed the press conference, highlighting the event’s role in fostering community spirit and unity among the participating localities. He also noted the deep-rooted tradition of horse racing in Marsa, where the country’s premier races have long been held.

Toni Demanuele, Vice-Chairman of the Malta Racing Club, congratulated all those involved and praised the horse owners for preparing their horses to peak form so early in the season. He expressed his hopes for a competitive and fair race.

Matthew Brincat, CEO of Malta Equidrome, and Max Zammit, CEO of Equestri Malta, also spoke at the event, thanking the Southern Region for its continued support in making this third edition of the Cup a reality. They also highlighted the significant prize fund allocated for Premier-category horses, which further elevates the competition’s status.

To conclude the event, Mr Aquilina presented commemorative souvenirs to the entities that played a key role in making this initiative possible.

7 – Eden De L’Iton (Marsaxlokk Local Council)
8 – Caprice De Cosse (Birżebbuġa Local Council)
9 – Ellington Dream (Ħamrun Local Council)
10 – El Presidente (Marsaskala Local Council)
11 – Dragster De Bomo (Għaxaq Local Council)
12 – Taiga Woodland (Gudja Local Council)

With the stage now set, anticipation is building for what promises to be an exciting and closely contested race as the local councils rally behind their assigned competitors.
