From the begining, Luca Vella and Rossana Oddi stood out as the top swimmers at this year’s Garmin BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships, held by Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club.
The Championships, run by the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, included six races—five 2km races and one 4km race. These events also served as qualifiers for the upcoming Garmin Malta – Gozo – Malta and Garmin Malta – Gozo Malta Open Water Competitions, set for September 21, 2024.
Luca Vella won his third National title, having previously taken first place in 2021 and 2023. He performed well throughout the Championships, but had strong competition from Sam Camilleri and Giuseppe Borg, who also often reached the podium.
Newcomer Rossana Oddi matched Vella’s success by finishing unbeaten. Kaitlyn Muscat and Michela Camilleri followed her on the overall podium, both of whom also often competed for top spots.
At the end of the event, trophies were given to the Overall and Age Group Winners by Club Board Member Joseph Farrugia.
“Once again, the Garmin BSJ Open Water National Swimming Championships brought together many talented swimmers. We thank all the swimming clubs and athletes for their support,” said Euchar Camilleri, Club Secretary. “We also appreciate Garmin Malta for their long-standing support of these championships.”
