At the Marsa Racetrack this past Sunday, a thrilling set of nine races captivated spectators, all dedicated to trotting. The highlight of the day was the race for class Premier trotters, covering a lengthy 2640m, where Caprice De Cosse steered by Mario Fenech clinched a hard-fought victory.
The Premier class race saw a lineup of eleven top-tier trotters, but it was the intense battle down the final straight that seized everyone’s attention. Caprice De Cosse, hailing from France, edged out Swedish contender M.T. Montpellier, piloted by Cliferty Calleja, in a gripping duel to notch its first victory of the year. Following closely were Ghost, under Charles Degiorgio, and Espit Chupitos with Charles Camilleri, who finished third and fourth respectively. The winning horse recorded a notable average time of 1.15.4” per kilometer.
The day also featured compelling races for class Gold trotters. In one of these, Destrier D’Or, guided by Redent Magro, displayed a remarkable burst of speed in the last 500 meters to secure its inaugural win on Maltese soil, narrowly defeating Typhoeus Face ridden by Noel Baldacchino. The race concluded with Felicio Du Joamax and Mellby Drake trailing in the subsequent positions.
The second Gold class race was dominated from start to finish by Funny Boy, with Marco Debono at the reins. This Swedish trotter held its lead over the entire 2640m to achieve its first Maltese win, followed by Bicetre and Billie Holiday, with Quite E Wood rounding out the top four.
The racing day opened with several other exciting matchups, including class Copper and Bronze races. Hartist Griff, My Love M.L., and Flexy Vert each took home wins in their respective Copper and Bronze class races, setting impressive times. In the Silver class, victories went to Lee Harvey Bros and Ecuador, both expertly handled by Paul Galea, who had a standout day with three wins.
