Sliema Wanderers secured a valuable 1–0 victory against Mosta in the YoHealth Malta Premier League Closing Round, leaving their opponents still searching for their first points in this stage of the season.
The only goal of the game came in the 22nd minute. A corner from Roko Prsa found Gustavo Alcino unmarked in the box, and he headed the ball past goalkeeper David Akpan to put Sliema ahead.
Mosta’s best chance before half-time arrived in the 34th minute. Joao Da Silva delivered a corner that was flicked on to Emmanuel Prince Chibuzor, but his header flew over the crossbar.
Early in the second half, Thiago Espindola fired from outside the box in the 56th minute, but the shot went wide.
Mosta then had a good opportunity in the 69th minute when Uros Duranovic struck from distance, but Akpan was alert and comfortably saved.
Sliema came close again in the 77th minute when Mohamed Awad made a strong run and passed to Wescley. His low shot was well saved by Akpan, who pushed the ball away for a corner.
Mosta were nearly level in the 85th minute when a free kick into the box reached Giancarlo Goncalves. He took a quick shot, but it struck the post and went out.
