Late penalty seals City win over Liverpool

Manchester City came from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield, ending Liverpool’s eight-match unbeaten home run and keeping pressure on league leaders Arsenal.

City started strongly and should have scored early. Erling Haaland had a chance but was stopped by Alisson, and Omar Marmoush missed an even better opportunity when he shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Liverpool struggled in the first half and were mostly pinned back. Mohamed Salah had their best chance, but his shot went just wide after a deflection. Liverpool felt unlucky not to get a penalty when Salah appeared to be pulled in the box, but the referee and VAR waved play on.

After the break, Liverpool missed several big chances. Hugo Ekitike headed wide from close range, and Florian Wirtz failed to score after a good team move. City defender Marc Guéhi was heavily involved and avoided a possible red card after fouling Salah outside the box.

The game turned in the 74th minute when Dominik Szoboszlai scored a brilliant long-range free-kick to put Liverpool ahead. City responded quickly, with Bernardo Silva scoring from close range after a knock-down from Haaland.

In stoppage time, Alisson fouled Matheus Nunes in the penalty area. Haaland calmly scored the penalty to give City the win.

There was late drama when Szoboszlai was sent off for fouling Haaland as the ball went into the net, but it did not change the result. City secured only their third win at Anfield in 39 visits and kept the title race alive.
