Substitute Jan Busuttil earned Birkirkara a point with a goal deep into stoppage time as the match ended 2-2 against closing round leaders Floriana at the Centenary Stadium.
Busuttil’s 94th minute equaliser does little to change Birkirkara’s fate, as they will drop into the bottom six for the final phase of the YoHealth Malta Premier Closing Round regardless. However, the point could have significant consequences for Floriana at the top of the table. Should Ħamrun Spartans beat Mosta tomorrow, they will draw level with Floriana on 25 points with five games remaining in the title race.
Floriana made a bright start when Kenan Dersigavic put them ahead after just four minutes, only for Kemar Reid to level things up almost immediately. The Greens regained the advantage on 32 minutes through a Jake Grech penalty, after Lacunza fouled Mbong in the box.
Birkirkara refused to give up however, and their persistence paid off in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Busuttil struck to snatch a draw, leaving Floriana frustrated at having let a winning position slip so late in the game.
