A late free kick from former Hibernians defender Clayton Failla gave Gżira United a valuable win and extended Hibernians’ difficult run to six league matches without a victory.
Hibernians created the better chances in the first half, with efforts from Kevin Halabaku saved by goalkeeper Edoardo Colombo, while Bjorn Kristensen also hit the post shortly before the break.
The second half was more balanced, although Hibernians tried to push forward in the closing stages. However, Gżira found the decisive moment in the 87th minute when Failla scored directly from a free kick, with Constantin Branescu unable to stop the shot.
The victory moves Gżira level on points with Marsaxlokk F.C. in third place and strengthens their push for a top-six finish, while Hibernians’ hopes of reaching the top six have become more difficult.
