Maltese basketball is bidding farewell to one of its most respected and accomplished figures after Stephanie “Steffi” De Martino announced her early retirement from the sport following an ACL injury that will require surgery and a rehabilitation period of between seven and nine months.
Her decision brings to an end a remarkable playing career that saw her leave a lasting mark on Maltese basketball both locally and on the international stage.

The Malta Basketball Association paid tribute to De Martino, describing her as a true servant of Maltese basketball who represented her country with distinction for nearly two decades. Her contribution to the national team was immense, with a medal haul that reflects both longevity and excellence.
Among her most notable achievements with Malta were a gold medal at the Games of the Small States of Europe in 2017, a silver medal in the 3×3 competition in 2025, and a bronze medal in 2015. She also helped Malta win gold at the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries in 2010 and 2016 at the senior level, as well as in 2007 with the Under-18 national team.
Further success followed with a silver medal at the 2024 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries and bronze medals in 2012, 2014 and 2018 with the senior women’s team, together with another bronze at Under 18 level in 2009.
At the domestic level, De Martino’s consistency and influence were equally evident. Over the course of her career, she earned five Most Valuable Player awards and 11 Player of the Month recognitions, underlining the quality she brought to the court year after year.
Yet beyond the medals and accolades, it was her emotional farewell message that captured just how much basketball meant to her.
In a heartfelt post addressed directly to the sport, De Martino described basketball as far more than a game. She called it her routine, her escape and her identity. She reflected on the sacrifices, the discipline, the missed shots she stayed behind to correct, and the highs and lows that shaped her journey.

She also wrote movingly about the pain of seeing her career end in a way she had never imagined. Rather than having the chance to enjoy a planned farewell, De Martino revealed she still had five more weeks in mind before injury abruptly closed the chapter.
That, she admitted, is what hurt the most. Not only was it over, but she did not get to finish the story the way she felt it deserved to be finished.
Still, her message was not one of bitterness. Instead, it was filled with gratitude for everything the game had given her. From purpose and confidence to resilience and lifelong memories, De Martino made clear that basketball had shaped the person she became.

She also spoke proudly about wearing Malta’s colours, winning titles and cups, and sharing the journey with teammates who became family.
Her retirement, despite the possibility of returning fully fit after surgery and rehabilitation, underlines the emotional and personal weight of the decision. It marks the close of a chapter, but certainly not the end of the legacy she leaves behind.
De Martino’s impact on Maltese basketball will not be remembered solely through medals, trophies and individual honours, impressive as they are. It will also be remembered through the example she set, the professionalism she showed, and the inspiration she provided to younger generations.
For Maltese basketball, this is the end of an era. For Steffi De Martino, it is the conclusion of a journey that was filled with passion, sacrifice and pride.
Her playing career may now be over, but her name will remain firmly etched in the story of Maltese basketball for many years to come.
