Newcastle United were denied a first-leg victory against Barcelona in their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie, conceding a stoppage-time penalty that allowed Lamine Yamal to equalise. The 1-1 result ended Barcelona’s four-game winning run across all competitions.
St James’ Park witnessed a high-intensity start, with Newcastle pressing from the outset. Sandro Tonali and Anthony Elanga both tested Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García in the opening quarter-hour. Barcelona responded and nearly took the lead when Dan Burn deflected Fermín López’s delivery wide. Newcastle continued to press but were unable to convert key chances, including a cross from Elanga that narrowly missed William Osula at the back post.

In the second half, Newcastle maintained their attacking intent. Osula fired over from a Lewis Hall through ball, while Raphinha saw his cross miss the target for Barcelona. Substitutes injected energy into the match, with Jacob Murphy volleying over and Harvey Barnes hitting the post in the 74th minute. Joelinton’s rebound was ruled offside.
Newcastle finally took the lead in the 86th minute, with Barnes volleying home from Murphy’s delivery to spark celebrations across the Gallowgate End. Their lead, however, lasted only minutes. In stoppage time, Malick Thiaw tripped Dani Olmo in the box, allowing Yamal to score from the penalty spot and draw Barcelona level.
The first leg ends 1-1, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg in Catalonia next week. Newcastle will travel to Camp Nou needing a strong performance to advance in the Champions League.
