Atlético Madrid secured a commanding 5-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg, extending their home knockout unbeaten run under Diego Simeone to 20 matches.
The match started disastrously for Tottenham, whose Premier League struggles carried into Europe. Within six minutes, Antonín Kinský slipped while attempting a pass, allowing Ademola Lookman to set up Julián Álvarez. Marcos Llorente finished from close range to give Atlético an early lead. Eight minutes later, Micky van de Ven also slipped, giving Antoine Griezmann a free opportunity to double the advantage. Shortly after the restart, a mis-kick by Kinský presented Álvarez with a tap-in, making it 3-0 and prompting his substitution for Guglielmo Vicario.

Vicario could not prevent a fourth goal shortly after, as a Griezmann free-kick deflected off Pape Matar Sarr, and Robin Le Normand scored the rebound. Tottenham managed a reply when Richarlison assisted Pedro Porro, who finished calmly. Despite further efforts from Tottenham, including a Cristian Romero shot hitting the post, Atlético regained control in the second half.
Ten minutes into the second half, Álvarez completed his brace after a clearance fell to him following a Jan Oblak save from Richarlison. Atlético’s dominance continued, with Porro assisting Dominic Solanke for Tottenham’s second goal, ending the match at 5-2.
The result leaves Tottenham facing a three-goal deficit ahead of the second leg in London next Wednesday. Atlético Madrid has now won 16 of their last 18 home matches, demonstrating their consistent strength in European competition. Tottenham’s defeat also marks their sixth consecutive loss in all competitions.
