Manchester City was declared the best club of the previous season

The current champion of England, Manchester City, was declared the best club in the previous season at last night’s ceremony in Paris.

To everyone’s surprise, Real Madrid was only the third-best team, although they won even 4 out of a possible 5 trophies.

Manchester City won the Premier League because it was only 1 point ahead of Klopp’s Liverpool, which won both domestic cups and was defeated by Real Madrid in the Champions League final. In the general standings, City was first with one trophy and relegation to the 1/8 finals of the Champions League, Liverpool was second with 2 cups and losing the final of the Champions League, and Real was only third with winning the LaLiga, Champions League, Spanish and European Super Cups.

It is especially surprising that the Madrid team had, for sure, the most difficult path to the trophy in the Champions League, beating PSG, Chelsea, Manchester City and finally Liverpool in the final.

This is the first time that this award is given, and unlike the Ballon d’Or, journalists do not participate in the voting. Manchester City won first place due to the most nominations in both the men’s and women’s competitions at the ceremony.

Of course, this award caused a lot of reactions, so even Toni Kroos was not immune, who said what he thought about it with his sarcastic tweet. He just wrote ‘third best team in 2021/22, happy?‘ alluding to all the trophies they won the previous season, unlike Pep Guardiola’s first-place team.
