Major works are underway inside the restricted players’ access zone at the National Stadium, Ta’ Qali, forcing a last-minute reroute for teams and officials ahead of Sunday’s showcase fixture, Valletta vs Ħamrun Spartans.
Video footage seen by Malta Sport shows construction activity along the outer part of the restricted area that links the team coaches to the dressing-room area, rendering the usual pathway unusable and triggering an alternative entry plan inside the red-zone perimeter.
The change compounds a turbulent start to the season at the national venue. On Matchday One, the pitch condition drew heavy criticism from players and coaches; now the movement of squads and match personnel faces fresh complications just days before one of the league’s marquee fixtures. The Malta Premier League, which rents the National Stadium from the National Association, is coordinating with venue operators and security teams to maintain segregation lines, uphold safety protocols and preserve the integrity of the teams’ matchday routine.
Operationally, rerouting players and staff through a secondary restricted area requires re-mapping of security checkpoints, steward placement, broadcast camera positions and medical access lanes. Any bottlenecks in the tunnel footprint or vehicle apron can ripple into arrival timings, warm-up schedules and broadcast build-up. Stakeholders will also have to ensure that accreditation access and emergency routes remain compliant under the temporary layout.
The timing of the works will raise questions. With the international break beginning on 1 September, there is a nine-day window before Malta host San Marino in a friendly, an opportunity that, on paper, could have reduced matchday disruption to domestic fixtures. Given the recent criticism of the surface and now the constraints around the players’ route, many will ask whether this project could have been scheduled or phased to avoid the Super Sunday programme altogether.
For now, the priority will be to deliver a safe, orderly entry for Valletta and Ħamrun Spartans and to ensure the football itself takes centre stage. Malta Sport will continue to follow this story closely and provide updates across our platforms.
