Swieqi United surrendered two crucial points in their push for automatic promotion and must now face Birżebbuġa in a decisive play-off to determine who claims the second place in next season’s Premier League.
The decider is scheduled to be played on Thursday at 7 pm at the Centenary Stadium, after both sides finished level on 46 points following a dramatic final round in the Challenge League promotion battle.
Swieqi appeared to be on course to secure the advantage they needed when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Fgura United, while Birżebbuġa kept their hopes alive with an important 3-2 victory over Sirens.
Knowing that victory would have allowed them to maintain their edge, Swieqi made an encouraging start and looked composed during the first half. Their breakthrough arrived through captain Paul Fenech, who produced a superb strike from around 30 metres that gave goalkeeper Gerson Mifsud no chance.
At that stage, Swieqi seemed firmly in control of their destiny. However, Fgura refused to fade and gradually worked their way back into the contest. Their reward came in the 70th minute when a well-worked team move ended with Karl Formosa converting from close range to beat Timothy Aquilina and level the score at 1-1.
That goal changed the complexion of the afternoon and ultimately proved costly for Swieqi, who saw the two-point cushion they had been carrying wiped out at the decisive moment. Instead of sealing promotion, they must now regroup quickly for a winner-takes-all encounter against Birżebbuġa.
Birżebbuġa, meanwhile, did what they had to do in a thrilling match against Sirens. Their opponents struck first after only five minutes through Trezequet Zammit, placing early pressure on Birżebbuġa’s promotion bid.
Birżebbuġa responded well and found an equaliser through Matthew Xuereb around the half-hour mark, restoring belief before the interval. Yet the match swung again in added time of the first half when Thiago Nonato Peixoto converted from the penalty spot to put Sirens back in front.

Any hopes Sirens had of holding on were quickly disrupted after the restart. Leonardo Agius brought Birżebbuġa level in the 49th minute, before Daniel Zerafa struck what proved to be the winning goal in the 55th minute, completing an impressive turnaround and ensuring that the promotion race would go all the way to a decider.
The final standings in the section saw Balzan finish on 48 points, with Swieqi and Birżebbuġa locked together on 46. Melita ended on 38, while Sirens and Pietà both finished on 35. Fgura closed on 32, and St Andrews ended their campaign on 27.
For Swieqi, the frustration will be difficult to ignore. They entered the final day with the upper hand, only to let it slip when it mattered most. For Birżebbuġa, there is renewed momentum and belief after producing the result they needed under pressure. Now, with a place in the Premier League at stake, nothing separates the two sides except one final match.
