'Pazza Inter' storm into Coppa Italia final to complete stunning comeback

Inter booked their place in the Coppa Italia final after producing a dramatic late turnaround to beat Como 3-2, overturning a two-goal deficit extraordinarily.

For the second time in just 10 days, Como let a two-goal lead slip against the Nerazzurri, who kept alive their hopes of a domestic double with a comeback that looked unlikely for long stretches of the night. The side from the lake had been on course to reach the first Coppa Italia final in their history after a superb opening hour.

Como were the sharper and more adventurous side in the first half and went close when Marc Oliver Kempf struck the post with a header after Josep Martínez had denied Martin Baturina. The breakthrough eventually arrived on the half-hour mark when Ignace Van der Brempt surged to the byline and pulled the ball back for Baturina, who fired home emphatically from close range.

The goal transformed the tie, and Como continued to threaten. Tasos Douvikas sent a header narrowly wide from a dangerous corner, while Inter’s best opportunity of the half saw Marcus Thuram’s effort cleared off the line by Máximo Perrone.

Como appeared to be in complete control shortly after the restart. A careless pass from Piotr Zieliński handed possession to Nico Paz, who quickly released Lucas Da Cunha, and the Frenchman made no mistake from a tight angle to double the advantage and leave Inter staring at elimination.

But the momentum shifted in the closing stages. Hakan Çalhanoğlu gave Inter hope when his long-range strike took a deflection and found the bottom corner with just over 20 minutes remaining. Como then missed a huge chance to put the tie beyond doubt when substitute Assane Diao failed to convert a clear one-on-one opportunity, a miss that would prove decisive.

Inter punished that wastefulness. Çalhanoğlu struck again to level matters, this time guiding home with precision to cap a relentless fightback, before Petar Sučić completed the turnaround in the 89th minute with a curling finish that sent the Nerazzurri through to Rome.

It was a cruel ending for Como, whose remarkable rise in recent years had put them within touching distance of an historic final. Instead, it is Inter who march on, with Cristian Chivu’s side now just one step away from another Coppa Italia triumph as they await either Atalanta or Lazio in the final.
