Al Nassr weighs historic father and son scenario as Cristiano Jr emerges for senior promotion

Al Nassr is reportedly considering the possibility of promoting Cristiano Ronaldo Jr to the club’s first team next season, in a move that could create one of the most remarkable family moments ever seen in top-level football.

According to reports from Saudi Arabia, the Riyadh club is expected to make a final decision at the end of the season, with the matter said to depend on a technical assessment of whether the teenager is ready to contribute at the senior level. The reports suggest the idea is under serious consideration, although there has been no official confirmation from Al Nassr at this stage.

If the move were to go ahead, Cristiano Jr, who turns 16 in June, could potentially share the pitch with his father, Cristiano Ronaldo, who remains under contract at Al Nassr for another year and is still a central figure in the club’s title push. Reuters reported only days ago that Ronaldo continues to play a major role for the side, with Al Nassr sitting top of the Saudi Pro League and the Portuguese forward still delivering at 41 years of age.

Such a promotion would carry obvious sporting and commercial significance. From a football perspective, it would place Cristiano Jr under intense scrutiny at an extremely young age. In contrast, from a wider club perspective, it would be a global story of enormous visibility. The possibility also fits with Ronaldo’s previously expressed desire to extend his career long enough to one day play alongside his son, a scenario that has long captured the imagination of supporters around the world.

The wider regulatory context also makes the story more plausible than it may once have seemed. Saudi Pro League rules introduced for recent seasons allow clubs to register two non-Saudi players born in 2003 or later, while reports around league reforms have indicated that the minimum age threshold for registration was reduced to 16. That means any such step would still depend on Cristiano Jr reaching the required age and satisfying registration and technical criteria.

For now, however, the story remains one of possibility rather than certainty. What is clear is that Al Nassr now appears willing to at least explore a move that would be unprecedented in modern elite football, one that could see the Ronaldo name occupy two places on the same senior team sheet.
