National Stadium pitch branded “disastrous” as four clubs secure venue switch

The Malta Premier League has approved requests from Gżira United, Birkirkara, Tarxien Rainbows and Floriana to move their upcoming fixtures from the National Stadium to the Tony Bezzina Stadium, after mounting concerns over the condition of the national venue’s playing surface.

Clubs described the National Stadium lawn as being in a “disastrous state,” with players and coaching staff warning that the current surface is unfit for purpose and poses an increased injury risk. One player, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Malta Sport the pitch “is not fit for purpose,” while another cautioned that “someone will get badly hurt” if standards are not urgently addressed. Several coaches also went on the record in post-match interviews over the weekend to criticise the turf and its impact on match quality.

Following the formal complaints filed this morning, the MPL confirmed that next week’s fixtures will be played at Tony Bezzina Stadium. The decision was taken to safeguard player welfare and preserve the integrity of competition while remedial work is considered.

The venue switch will require adjustments for broadcasters, match operations and supporters, but clubs argue the move is necessary until the national ground meets acceptable playability standards. The MPL is now expected to outline a clear remediation plan and timeline for the National Stadium, including independent inspections and regular updates on maintenance progress.
