On Sunday morning, the passing of one of Malta’s greatest-ever footballers, Willie Vassallo, was announced. He died at the age of 75 in Melbourne, Australia.
The news was shared by his brother Angelo, who confirmed that Vassallo passed away in Australia, where he had been living with his family after emigrating in 1978.
Vassallo was born in Gżira and showed his football talent from a young age. Although he later became a legend at Floriana, he actually started out with the youth team at Gżira United.
At just 17 years old, he had already represented Malta in two youth competitions – the FISEC games and the UEFA Youth Tournament. His skill caught the attention of Floriana’s coach at the time, Lolly Borg, who was known for spotting young talent. In the mid-1960s, Vassallo signed with Floriana.
There is no doubt that Vassallo was one of the best midfielders Malta has ever seen. He enjoyed a brilliant career, helping Floriana win every major local title between 1966 and 1977. His most outstanding season was in 1973/74, when he was named Malta’s Footballer of the Year by the MFA.

In total, Vassallo won 19 titles with Floriana, including five league championships, three FA Trophies, and other honours like the Independence Cup, Sons of Malta Cup, Testaferrata Cup, and Christmas Cup.
He made his national team debut on 30 December 1969 in a match against Luxembourg. One of his most memorable performances came in 1971, when Malta played England at Wembley Stadium. He earned 31 caps for Malta and scored twice, during a time when the national team played far fewer matches than they do today.
After moving to Australia in 1978, Vassallo continued to play football with Green Gully SC. Despite living abroad, he visited Malta often and stayed in touch with many of his former teammates, especially those from Floriana.
Willie Vassallo will be remembered as one of the true legends of Maltese football.
