Atalanta’s chances of winning the 2024/25 Serie A title are now almost gone after a 1-0 loss to Lazio at the Gewiss Stadium. It was their seventh home league match without a win since the start of 2025.
As expected, Atalanta started slowly, and even when they began to build momentum, Lazio’s defence stayed sharp. Key passes from Davide Zappacosta and Mateo Retegui were cut out, and although Atalanta won corners, Lazio defended them well. Their strategy was clear: take the lead and protect it – just as they had done in most of their previous victories this season. Atalanta struggled to create clear chances, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s dangerous pass was blocked as the first half wore on.
Lazio were forced into an early change after Nuno Tavares picked up an injury following a challenge from Sead Kolašinac. Atalanta kept pushing, but their attacks led only to more corners with no end result. After half-time, Lazio grew in confidence and started to push forward more.
Dele-Bashiru went close with a strong shot from outside the box, but Marco Carnesecchi made a brilliant save. Moments later, after a great stop from Christos Mandas on Retegui’s effort, Dele-Bashiru flicked a clever header to Gustav Isaksen on the break, and the Danish striker calmly scored past the out-of-position Carnesecchi – his sixth goal of the season.
Atalanta needed a quick reply, and Zappacosta had a decent chance after a rebound, but Mandas dealt with it easily. Despite some late changes from coach Gian Piero Gasperini – including bringing on Lazar Samardžić and Daniel Maldini – Atalanta couldn’t find a way through. Lazio nearly doubled their lead through Luca Pellegrini, but his shot was weak and saved.
In the end, Lazio held on for the win, leaving Atalanta with a third straight league defeat and fourth consecutive home game without scoring – something they haven’t experienced in 20 years. What was once a strong title push is now fading, while Lazio celebrate another away win in Bergamo – their third in the last five visits.
