While the festive season offers a break for many, it is a busy period for local football officials and players as the January transfer window approaches. One of the most promising talents in Maltese football, 25-year-old offensive midfielder Jan Busuttil of Balzan FC, appears set for a move to a new club.
Busuttil, who has earned four caps with the Maltese national team and scored one goal, joined Balzan last January in a player exchange deal with Floriana FC that saw Jake Grech move in the opposite direction. Despite showing his potential, Busuttil’s time at Balzan has been challenging.
This season, Balzan have struggled in the Malta Premier League, ending the Opening Round with a much-needed victory after eight consecutive matches without a win. The dismissal of English coach Dave Rodgers under unclear circumstances has further added to the uncertainty within the squad, led by club president Anton Tagliaferro.
Busuttil has reportedly informed Balzan of his desire to seek a new opportunity, and the club is unlikely to stand in his way. While he remains under contract, Balzan are open to negotiating his transfer during the upcoming window.
There is already significant interest in Busuttil from several clubs in the Top Six of the Opening Round, as well as from a Challenge League team competing seriously for promotion this season. Balzan are not expected to let the player leave without securing a reasonable transfer deal, but a move appears imminent as Busuttil looks to start a fresh chapter in his career.
