South Korean football giants Jeonbuk Motors have announced the appointment of Gus Poyet as their new manager. The 57-year-old Uruguayan, known for his spells as head coach at Brighton & Hove Albion and as a former midfielder for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, replaces Kim Do-heon at the helm of the struggling club.
Jeonbuk Motors, historically one of Asia’s most successful football teams, have faced a challenging period in recent seasons. The club has won nine South Korean league titles, the most recent in 2021, and boasts two Asian Champions League titles from 2006 and 2016. However, their form has sharply declined, with the team narrowly avoiding relegation this month after a playoff.
Poyet’s appointment marks his return to club management following his departure from the Greece national team earlier this year. After leading Greece for two years, his contract expired in March. Poyet has a diverse coaching résumé, having managed teams across Europe, Asia, and South America, including Sunderland, AEK Athens, Real Betis, Shanghai Shenhua, and Bordeaux.
Jeonbuk Motors will be hoping that Poyet’s wealth of experience and tactical acumen can revitalise the team and guide them back to their former glory. His first challenge will be preparing the squad for the upcoming season and restoring the confidence of a club and fanbase accustomed to success.
The announcement signals Jeonbuk’s intent to rebuild and compete once more at the highest levels of South Korean and Asian football.
